Blah, I don't want to reinstall Windows!

I'm trying to install a lot of things in Windows 2000 that it seemed to miss... For example, I need the Volume Control program. Without it, I can't put the sound icon in the system tray. When I go to Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia > Click on "Show volume control in the taskbar" it spits back at me:

"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel."

WTF? If Windows noticed I had sound (which works fine) wouldn't it do this automatically? Also, it never installed programs such as Paint, Wordpad, and Calculator. Other than that, Windows works great.

Windows 2000, BTW. The system is a Dell Precision 410 with dual PIII 1GHz CPUs. Crystal Audio.
