Anyone know what the disc size limitation on this baby? According to the manufacturers page is 1TB, but Neweggg lists the limit as 2 TB.
 
If there is a capacity limit, I don't understand why it would depend on the docking station. Isn't it simply a pass through? My understanding was that the limitation was imposed by the OS.
 
Makes sense. Too bad that means that the means the lightning fried both 2TB drives in my RAID 1.

Seems many manfgs. use the largest HD avaliable at the time of the products introduction for testing and never update the specs.

Awhile back I did read about problems with some docking station's chipsets (not Thermaltake units) not accepting the 2TB drives but AFAIK this isn't a problem anymore.

The BlacX dock specified in the original post is a USB-only dock (yeah, I missed that, too). The USB portion, of course, uses a SATA-to-USB converter chip and you are likely aware of the early issues (ca. 2003) with disk sizes and those USB converter chips. Also, as disks have enlarged, they've sometimes required more power and there've been external housings that couldn't deliver enough current.

Finally, I've seen occasional references to SATA/eSATA housings that HAVE used some kind of circuitry between the SATA disk and the SATA/eSATA port. I have no idea why they'd do this, but if there's any kind of circuitry in-between, it's certainly possible there could be disk size limitations in the coverter circuitry.
