I am not sure if this is a hardware or software question.. but here it is.

We are going to get Blackberrys at work, and my boss wants to know whether -- in addition to email -- we can use it to manage any servers or anything like that? Will it allow us to reboot a server, or perhaps restart a service? Will it connect to VPNs (checkpoint)?

Just curious, preciate any info! :)

I never done it.. if you have a web interface for your servers you and browse to it and send commands.. otherwise.. no... i had old treo that i loaded remote desktop software, i can log into pc and do stuff.. but its slow as heck , you wouldn't even want to...

blackberry was build for email.. so just let it do email.

i dont think so... it is pretty basic in what it can do. like vegito said, unless it has a web interface you are no go. there is no command line anything and i am not aware of a 3rd party program alowing you to do this.

No, you can't. You should purchase smartphones running windows mobile software or palm os (although palm is moving to ms os's) if you want this ability. My blackberry is great, but it does not have the versatility my pocket pc phone had. If you get one with wireless (802.11), you can remote in with pretty good speed to a server when you have a network. Only thing is, trying to get it to work with VPN if your servers don't have public IPs.
