sidekick vs sidekick II vs blackberry

which one is the easiest/most productive to use "on-the-go", e.g. walking around and being able to tap a little note or browse a wap/html site without much mental attention?

It REALLY depends on your needs.

The Blackberry platform is more business-oriented. Better PDA functions, and since it doesn't "close" you can type on it without having to open the screen. The Blackberry can also integrate better with Outlook...for the Sidekick you have to pay extra for sync software.

The Sidekick platform is more youth-oriented (for lack of a better term). The keyboard is bigger and easier to type on, but you have to flip the screen open to get to it. The web browser, IMO, is far better and more intuitive than the Blackberry. The PDA functions are not spectacular, but they work.. Entering and managing the calendar is a bit cumbersome. OTOH you can do anything that does not require typing without ever opening the screen, which I like as the "closed" Sidekick is a little more streamlined than the Blackberry.

As a non-business user, I love the Sidekick. The Sidekick II is well-worth the extra money. The d-pad was relocated from behind the closed screen to the left-hand side which gives you a lot more flexibility without opening the screen. They also added two customizable/context-sensitive shoulder buttons and external power and volume controls, both minimizing the need to open the screen. About the only downside to the SKII is the integrated camera, which isn't a BAD thing necessarily, but I would sooner sacrifice a crappy camera for a smaller device.

Nobody would consider a sidekick for business, & very few people use blackberries (minus the 7100) outside of business.

Two completely different markets.

Blackberry by definition is the more productive device.

My thoughts also, Sidekick is for personal use where Black Berry is more for a business.

I know everybody thinks "blackberry is for business, sidekick is for teens"
but I was hoping somebody could tell me some specific things about the USER INTERFACE about each one

like I said, I want something that "just works" and that I can mindlessly operate while walking around chatting w/ friends or thinking about something else or whatever

Read my post....if you have a specifc question, let me know. I have been using Sidekicks for 2 years and I have some experience with RIM, but not nearly as much.

I supported 15 users with blackberries (and carried one myself), I've configured/maintained BES & blackberries from multiple providers.

I would not use one for personal use (with the possible exception of the 7100, if you like it).

As much of a tech toy lover as I am blackberries do NOT excite me. They aren't flashy, the displays aren't that attractive (and they're low resolution), the interface is somewhat cumbersome at times, they have no multimedia capability whatsoever, they're bulky, not particularly expandable, need I go on?

For business use though they are great. I don't care what anyone says about predictive text for people that send the majority of their correspondence via mobile device a full keyboard is essential. They're great for reading & sending e-mail, integration with Outlook (Contacts, schedule, etc.), opening basic Office attachments, etc. With BES mobile data they also work relatively well for rudimentary internet access. It's slow as hell & you can't do much with it but if you need a map, driving directions, or a quick google search to verify information they can handle that.

The BB interface is pretty easy. Getting around with the jog wheel, which is the main click button too, is simple.

You have a bunch of icons on the screen and roll the wheel to the app of choice and click to choose. Click again to enter the app menu bar and roll to select options. Hit the back button which is located next to the wheel to back up. Very easy.

I have the SKII and love it. I take it with me to work and use it to take notes, to-do, calendaring, etc. I could also use it to as a pager to alert me of problems (email/SMS). It doesn't look very professional, but it's definitely capable. Also, you can add other apps/games/tones/etc for free/cheap.

Absolutely, I have had the SkI and II.
I have used approx 60 dif cell phones, and the SK is by far the best.
Web browsing is wonderful, and the Tmail is a nice touch.

EDIT: BTW def go with the SKII. Not only are the looks greatly improved...
But the speakerphone is top-notch, and the battery life and signal are stronger.
Built in camera is also nice b/c you an snap and email right on the phone.
But dont expect stellar pics. Handy either way;)
