I was hanging out with a group of primarily black people. It got hot inside the room and several of the black girls took off their wigs to expose very short hair.

I had a WTF moment and asked them about it. They told me that most black women cut their hair very short and wear wigs.

True?

You see a lot more weaves than wigs, but a decent number of black females wear wigs. Good Hair's actually interesting, Chris Rock's pretty funny and it really gives you insight into black females and their hair. I've dated black chicks since I started dating and have spent countless hours in beauty salons waiting on them. And I still learned quite a few things from watching it.

I'd just like to say the moment I read the title to this thread, I laughed and knew I was destined to make a comment. Unfotunately I've got nothing to contribute of value. But this is a truly bizzare concept. True or not.

If It helps, i'm very confident it's not the case this side of the water.

These girls were a mixture of black Americans (been in the US for generations) and Africans (born in Africa, been in the US < 10 years).

This is interesting, i've honestly never heard it before. I know a few black girls and no such luck over here.

A wig goes over your entire head, covering any natural hair you have. You can be totally bald and wear a wig. A weave is either real, or synthetic hair that's weaved into your existing hair. You have to have enough real hair too be able to wave the weave into it or it won't work. Depending on the amount of weave being added and the complexity of things. It can take multiple days to finish, or one super long 18 hour session.

Did they have stocking caps on under the hair? They probably would rather have weaves, but if they don't have the natural hair or enough $$$, they'll go with a wig. I've see weaves where the hair alone cost over a thousand bucks. Factor in a stylists working on installing it for 10+ hours that's a lot of fucking money lol. Weaves also have insane upkeep unless she wants to look busted, wigs are close to zero maintaince, but as you mentioned the heat thing will not be good. When a non black person see's a black woman take her wig off like SWOOSH! For the 1st time they always seem to have a look of "wtf"

I saw at least one stocking cap, not sure about all of them. These girls couldn't afford anything expensive, so that makes sense.

Yeah, it was a weird moment. All of sudden, you realize that these girls all have fake hair. It really threw me off.
 
So what is the point of wigs/weaves? Is it unfashionable to have curly black hair? Or is there another reason?

The black girl I know these other black people through doesn't have a wig, but she does straighten her hair.
 
I know a few gals who wear their hair like this. Some of them don't like their hair being curly/frizzy and don't like the big hassle of straightening it. Others simply like the ability to have totally different looks on different days.

Black people tend to have thicker much more coarse hair than the typical Caucasian. If they let it grow they'll either have a nappy mess, or they'll have to get a perm to straighten it out. The problem with perms is they all have Lye in them, which is poison. It burns when it's in, and if they get perms too often it'll cause their hair to fall out. With a weave you only need a medium amount of hair so it doesn't need to be permed. Also perms are expensive and time consuming, to keep it looking good they need to have it done every week or 2 at the most. It'll run them about $60-120 depending on how long their hair is. And can take 3-4 hours total.

While a lot don't want straight hair so they rock a non permed blow out or something, many want to fit in with the perceived notion fashion wise that straight hair's beautiful and nappy hair's ugly. They typically don't get curly hair like a Caucasian person would when they let it grow out. It will be much thicker and almost unmanageable without putting harsh chemicals in it. I've seen black females with bald spots and burn marks from getting a perm too frequently. But there's nothing else most of them can do to get straight hair without a wig or a weave.

And there are those who just like to have totally different looks whenever they feel like it. It's always amusing to work with a black woman who has fairly short hair on Friday but come Monday it's 3 inches longer. And some of the white people in the office will ask her how she did it lol.
