And what makes a watermelon worth $200, much less $6,000?

Its unusual black skin, Ohira said. Inside, the watermelon is crisp and hard. And, he says, it has unparalleled taste.

"It's a watermelon, but it's not the same," he said. "It has a different level of sweetness."

That just sounds well... wrong! :p

The watermelon was the first of 65 sold as part of the season's initial harvest and one of 9,000 expected for the entire year

9000@ 6100 apiece????

Where can a person get some of those seeds?????

If I wanted it sweeter couldn't I just pour some sugar on it and save the $6000?

Duh people, they're not buying it to eat, they're buying it for the seeds. Growing funky fruits like this rakes in big $$$$$ in grocery stores. Ask the guy that invented those "personal size" watermelons that are flying off the shelves for $2.50 a pop

Here you go. They're a little bigger than a softball.

"Other Densuke watermelons won't cost quite as much. Most will retail at department stores and supermarkets for a more modest 20,000 yen to 30,000 yen (U.S. $188 to U.S. $283), Ohira said."

most will go for far far less.

You made that up.

Nope, growers buy funky breeds at auction all the time. That "miniature watermelon" was a good example. UFO peaches, purple tomatoes, etc get high prices and people buy them for novelty.

Well....yeah...you're right. I made this up. Someone spend $1000 on a piece of fruit to eat it. That does make more sense.
