New thread on GRC reminded me of a guy known as Black Viper that did a bunch of work on windows hacks and preferred settings, primarily back in the Win95 and XP days as I recall.

Anybody else remember?

Yup. Mostly nonsense and snakeoil. He generated a lot of forum traffic from people wanting to know how to unbreak their shit.

i used his "hacks" on two systems for about 10 years, had mostly improvements with a few disadvantages. If you gonna go for a ultralight system, you need to be dedicated.
Most of the disadvantages can be avoided by actually reading up on what each service does. And for the record, i absolutely do believe that Windows, as a platform, has horrid service bloat.
Mind you, you're not gonna see the same performance increase today, that you would have seen on a C2D, WinXP PC 20 fifteen years ago.

Looks like he's still around. I remember using one of service configuration files when a virus messed up my services.

When I first started doing PC repair with Pentium computers(mind you I had C64-286/386/486 experience)....Windows 3.11 to Win95 upgrades, etc... A guy I knew hooked me up with some corporate Windows95 documentation, along with their format utility disk. This included most of what it took to deal with FAT16, bootstrap OS, and expectations to get a clean Windows installation. It also covered gaps in Plug&Play and IRQ tips/tricks to work with Windows and DOS drivers, all kinds of fun stuff that most people don't know about these days.

I haven't seen too many "hacks" that are worth anything. Most of the time the hacks are just tuning settings that were documented for the purpose of troubleshooting.

I remember him, and using his service tips. Not sure if they really did anything, but it was fun.

I see his site hasn't changed much at all, which is nice, along with his favorite restaurant:

Restaurant: Olive Garden ~ I love Pasta! My meal is Garlic bread sticks with Alfredo sauce, Cheese sticks and ranch dressing,
Fettuccine Alfredo w/ Shrimp, and to top it all off, a Black Tie Cheese Cake.
