Black Violin

Interesting? Yes. Amazing? No. It's not a demonstration of violin virtuosity if that's what you're thinking. They're even holding the violin on the wrong side in the header photo.

This girl knows how to play the violin.

I'm a classically trained Pianist, and trumpet player. I can normally find something wrong in the playing style of EVERY musician, professional or amateur.

After watching several of those videos, I can't find a single damn thing. That was PERFECTION. She's absolutely stunning, a virtuoso if I've ever seen or hear one.

EDIT: SHE'S FVCKING 14?!?!?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!? GAHHHH, I've been a musician all my life and I've never been anywhere CLOSE to that skill level! GODDAMNIT! ARRRGH!

/me goes to kill self with piano wire.

I agree. I'm a classical pianist (20 years) and violinist (15) as well, and while that unfortunately qualifies me for very little, I can readily see the talent of someone like Esther Kim.

Her bow control is incredible. Look at some of her other recordings. It's hard to imagine such a young girl (she's older now, but I think ~14 in those videos) with such mature expression. Watch her play the Partita as well. Her bow transitions are incredible. Another example is in this caprice.

Incredible.

I have played violin all my life, and after seeing that I am speechless.

I fully agree. Just the way she has TOTAL control over her instrument. Literally like a piece of her body. I'm stunned. I've seen some good musicians in my time (McMaster School of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music, Canadian Conservatory, etc) but Nothing on her level. Nothing.

She may have more talent, but the I'd rather listen to Black Violin 8 days of the week. She's practiced hard and is a very good musician, but I didn't see any of her in that performance. Anyone can learn to play someone else's music just like they did, but if you heard that without the video, would you know who it was? With enough training, anyone can do what that girl just did.

I'm not saying Black Violin is original, or even masters of their craft, but they're 1) different, and 2) show passion.

That girl looked like a well trained robot, IMO.

EDIT: Everyone thinks she's a great musician, and she is, but as someone who's been playing violin for the last 9 years (though not nearly as well as her), she didn't have passion, IMO.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this.

seriously.

what really impresses me is her dominance of the tempo. Saint-saens likes to float around, and she ...well...damn...she pulled it off.

That's because you don't have an eye for talent. Someone else's music? Are you JOKING me? Every song ever written since the first song was written has been a near copy of each other, if you look at the musical fundamentals of it all.

Music is a language; Like all languages, not all can understand it.

One persons opinion.🙂

In my opinion, she is no robot. She is showing grace and yet, fury, in a piece that demands that of anyone who should play it, and strangely, expects is of no one since so many people butcher it.

Thats what I was thinking. Its as if the violin is truly connected to her soul.

Ridiculous.

Like I posted in my edit, she's VERY, VERY GOOD, great maybe, but there's something missing for me.

We can disagree.
