Black video (except for mouse cursor) in Win98SE

Unless I boot to safe mode and unless I have plain vanilla 640x480 256 or 16 colors, I'm getting black video and have to reset in Windows. I installed the 30.82 nvidia driver for Win9x for my G4 ti4600 that came with the BFG card. What can I do/try? TIA.

I downloaded and installed the driver suggested at nvidia.com for Windows 9x, 81.98_forceware_win9x_international.exe. The same thing happened.

One thing happens every time I do one of these nVidia display driver installs, though. After I "Accept" I get this message:

The installation will be terminated.

When I click OK, the message disappears and then the installation appears to proceed "normally." I have to wonder if this message isn't implicated in my problem. Anybody?? Thanks for any help.
