black square on desktop icons

This appeared maybe a week ago or less. A lot, but not all, of my desktop icons have this black square. I'm not sure how it happened. It's like it's supposed to be a checkbox or something. Here's a picture of it

any ideas?
 
Did the color settings in display properties get changed somehow? like from true color to 24bit ?

that's got to be it. now that I look at my other computer's desktop that is definitely it. thanks. not sure how that happened.
