I have a 2009 Lexus IS250 with appox 133,000 miles. I have noticed that when I take long trips I get black soot on the chrome exhaust tips and light soot on the bumper molding surrounding the exhaust. I don't see any "smoke" when i start the engine or while in idle, nor do i have any warning messages or check engine indicator. Does this soot indicate a serious engine issue? I have been told that 133,000 miles really isn't considered high mileage for a Lexus. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

have you noticed excessive oil or fuel consumption? are we talking about huge black streaks here? all engines burn a bit of oil and fail to burn a bit of fuel, so a little bit of soot can be normal. on my car, slight blackening of the tips is far outweighed by brake dust.

Sounds like the car is running a bit rich (and the black crap is the result of unburnt fuel). My Evo ran like this from the factory (as the mitsu tune is exceedingly rich). Is this something that just started happening - or has it been going on for a while?

What's been done as far as maintenance? Spark plugs, oxygen sensors ever replaced?

I see that on tons of cars including our own, one of which is a 2014 and the other a 2015. Don't worry about it.

Sounds like it's running rich. Mine look like they've been painted black as it also runs notoriously rich.

How much are we talking? It is normal for it to gradually collect on the exhaust tips (and anything else exhaust comes in contact with).
