Black screen of death?

I have this old HP Pavilion that I am trying to get to work again. About two weeks ago I installed Windows XP on it and it worked fine. Shortly after that, I unplugged the monitor the HP was hooked to and used it for something else. Now when I try to hook the monitor up again I get no display whatsoever. The computer is on and running, I can hear the fans shift as it boots up windows, however, I can not see a dang thing.

I think I have a resolution problem, meaning that the resolution was somehow set to high for any monitor to display. I googled my problem and the only answers I could find were to just go into BIOS and change blah-blah-blah? I can?t see bios! No mater what monitor I use ? I even tried my 22 inch flat panel monitor I have at work, nothing. Any suggestions?
