"Black Screen of Death": 0xc0000034 error message

Your computer may freeze or it may restart to a black screen that has an 0xc0000034 error message after you install a Windows Vista service pack

So.

I'm tech support for some neighbors. Their teenager claims during an update he 'accidentally' cut the rig off by striking the I/O button with his phone. The actual black screen:

!! 0xc0000034 !! 247/94390 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms)

I've run the suggested fixes from MS kb975484. No Joy.

Repair hangs.
Restore hangs.
LKGC goes nowhere (same black screen)
Reset CMOS and tried everything again ---- nuthin'

Of course, they have no back up (data or OS).

Any ideas?

Or should I just recovery what data I can, reformat, and do a clean install ??
