I apologize in advance for the length of this post. The problem is I don't know much about computers, so I don't know exactly what is and is not relevant.
Summary: When I try to play a video or start up WC3 (which starts with a video the first time you load it), the screen goes black, the computer gets really slow, and the program stops responding.
Background: I have Dell Dimension 3000 that I bought a year ago. I have since added 2G of RAM and a G-Force 6200 graphics card (which is as good as I can get for a plain old PCI slot, which is all this computer has). I play World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3. Last week, I got a trojan called Virus Burster, which made thousands of little windows pop up, making the computer unusable. I took it to a place that fixes computers, and they said that Windows had to be reloaded, which would erase everything I had saved on my computer. I had this done, which cost $130. When I got the computer back (plus some free virus protection), I loaded WoW and WC3.
Problem: WoW works just fine, just like it did before the virus. When I try to start up WC3, however, I get a black screen and nothing happens. When I Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of it, the computer is very slow. The program is not responding, and I End Task. Once the task has been ended, the computer operates at normal speed again. This same thing happens if I try to watch a video with Media Center or watch a video on the internet (I tried to watch a live basketball game).
It may be important to note that WC3 is supposed to play an intro video when you start it up for the first time, so it may be having a problem with this intro video specifically, and not the rest of the game (which I cannot get to without going through the video). Strangly, the computer WILL play the WoW intro video.
Also, if I try to start up WC3 or play a video (thus causing the black screen scenario), end the task, and then subsequently go try to play WoW, I then DO experience problems with WoW. The computer will slow down and the screen will be back, except that the User Interface still shows up as it normally does. I see my health bar and action bars, all against a black backdrop on a slow-ass computer. This problem with WoW persists until I restart the computer. Once the computer restarts, WoW will work fine until I try to play WC3 or a video again.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this. Hopefully it has a simple solution that has simply been lost on my simple mind. You guys have helped me in the past, and I know you can do it again. I really appreciate it.
