Black screen fix for Mafia?

I bought Mafia (the original) off of steam the other day and whenever I quit the game I get a black screen with a dialog box saying the game has stopped working and Windows is trying to fix it. It always fails and the only way to correct the black screen is to ctrl+alt+del and then restart Windows. It only happens when I go to quit the game normally.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this? Never seen it happen before in any other games I've played on Windows 7. or any other Window OSes even.

Edit:
Sorry, should have read your post more closely. The only thing I can think of is to make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed for your 8800GT.

Yes well, I did see that thread and tried what was suggested but there is no 'Compatibility Tab' anywhere nor anything labeled 'Desktop Composition' to check or uncheck. So thats not going to fix it unfortunately for me.

Being a Steam app, you'll have to navigate to the root folder ( Steam/steamapps/common/ ) and set compatibility with the exe directly.

Okay, I had to dig down into the steam app like Anon suggested and change the compatibility mode from XP to Vista SP2 to disable the Desktop Composition. That seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for all the info and help guys. Greatly appreciated.
