Black Screen Crash with 7870 under load

Hi Gang,

I recently had some black screens followed by a crash during gaming with a PowerColor HD 7870 PCS+ Vortex II. I was playing FarCry 3 for the first time and this crash occurred within 10 minutes. I tried a few more times and the game will always black screen, and in fact the black screen seemed to be occuring quicker with each time I tried.

Also got the same black screen and crash while running 3D mark 11 after the initial black screen occured while playing FarCry 3. Got the error that "the display adapter has stopped working"....

The only time I was able to complete the 3D mark 11 benchmark was when I manually set the fan speed very high on the card. Card is not overclocked (beyond the factory OC for this card), and I do not believe this is a power supply issue as I have a decent 550w PSU and total draw under load does not exceed 300w.

Now the fun part - when I first built this system last month I needed to use the PCIe slot under the card. Unfortunately the card is so big and heavy that the rear end of the card "sagged" to the point where the PCIe slot underneath it would be covered. I was able to put a cable tie on the rear end of the card and lift it slightly such that I could use the PCIe slot under it. However, I immediately noticed artifacting during gaming ( but not crashing) so I cut the cable ties and removed the sound card I had in the slot under the video card. The video card seemed fine and the artifacting is gone, but now I get the black screen / crash. Card temps are around 76C when the crash occurs. I played AC3 for a month or so after this whole cable tie idiotic endevour and never had a crash; it only started when I played FarCry 3 for the first time (guessing its more graphic intense than AC3)

Could it be that "pulling" the card with a cable tie has caused the heatsink to ever so slightly loose contact and cause overheating? Or maybe this is a different issue altogether? I am using 12.11 drivers at the moment.

Oh, and I will never, ever, torque a video card with a cable tie again. Ever.

Thanks in advance!
