black plextor CDRW/black pioneer slot DVD

Anyone here currently have either a black Plextor CDRW or a black Pioneer slot DVD (106S)?
--- is the color truly black, or is it a dark shade of gray?

I found a place on pricewatch and Eb*y which sell these, but am unsure on the vendor and the quality of the product. (for all I know, these could be originally white OEM drives which were re-painted black by the seller)

I have not seen factory black units of this brand. I have a Pioneer 106S slot drive and a couple of other devices. If were to get a black case, I would remove their faceplates and paint them myself. I am now thinking silver or metallic blue to go in an aluminum case. 🙂

With the faceplates removed, and since they are plastic, I would try spraying them and then replace them.

I bought a Plextor drive from Thortek in black and it was a crappy paint job. Only a few company's make black drives for floppy's but i don't think any are made for DVD or CDRW. ANybody who sells them paints them.

Plextor used to sell real black drives, different product number and all. They stopped making them a while ago though. Any recent Plextor drive is a third party paint job.

Thanks for the input on the Pioneer.. since it is a slot loading drive, it's probably alot easier to pop out the bezel and paint it black myself.

As for the black plextor... this appears to be authentic http://www.harddrive.com/, search for "black plextor".
It looks true and authentic, but I'm a little surprised that I can't find another vendor which carries the same part. (guess it's time for an email to plextor.com)

HardDrive.com is owned by Thortek, who takes bezels off drives and paints them themselves. There is a really really small warning on HardDrive.com's site that warns that they painted them themselves.

According to Plextor, the black drives may be legit, I thought they had stopped making them:

Plextor

I'd give Harddrive.com a call to check it out anyway.
