Don't call me racist, but I noticed that a larger portion of black society covers their mouth while smiling/laughing than 'the norm.' Is this a cultural thing? Am I just imagining things?

sure, but I live in a black neighborhood and a huge percentage (majority) of the folks here do that.. I've never, ever noticed it to that degree before.

That's a valid point. I find it interesting because i'm indian and a lot of my family does that, so I wonder what the common root is..

i'm not judging anyone, i'm just curious as to the history behind it.

Maybe they figured out that the inside of the mouth is kind of gross.

Cultural differences abound within our country let alone the rest of the world. Too many folks lump cultural differences into stupid/ignorant assumptions based on their own culture. ALL Cultural habits/customs develop because they work in their respective cultures.

Might be to not laugh on someone and give them whatever crap you might have?

I did notice Scooby Doo covered his mouth when giggling/laughing. Shirley Scooby was racist. Racist toward the human race, because we're all a little 'black' inside... what, due to the fact that we all hail from Africa. ;)

argh, I knew I'd be called racist. I did not say "black people are inferior because they cover their mouths while they laugh." I asked if this is a cultural thing and if others have noticed it and/or knew the cultural reasons behind it.

It intrigues me because many south indian's i've met/ am related to do this and certain south indians have african roots (including my family). So, I was wondering if this is a habit that dates back centuries.
