which makes it easier to read/ less distracting?

seems to me that beige would be better since it creates less contrast with the screen

I agree, black will absorb more light. Beige is also very ugly and so old looking.

ok, but remember higher contrast does not mean better visibility. that's why I think biege may be better

this is an extremely interesting thread. i never thought much about the color of the monitor enclosure but id have to say that id go with black. then again i have my desktop and icons rather dark because its easier on my eyes so i guess that is why i would go with black. very interesting question though, great thread!

i go with black since it makes the enclosure look smaller on the desktop. I've got two 19 inchers in a dual config and a 21 incher on the same desktop and most people dont notice that it takes up a lot of space. In a darkened/dim room the black bezel frames everything real nice on the screen.

I don't think it makes a difference at all. Focus more on the specs of the monitor, and less on the color of the enclosure. Just get whatever matches more.

Black looks better, black shows dust more than beige, black increases enclosure temp.

I believe black enclosures may reflect more light than beige, simply because of the manufacturing process. AFAIK, that's why the black version of a CRT monitor always received a lower TCO rating than the beige one. Perhaps the story is different with more matte dark greys.

Just get the color that looks best to you. I'm not a big fan of beige anymore, not just b/c beige is typically blah, but because practically no two shades of "beige" are alike. But then, I really liked the original VAIO's purple color, and I think the Sony SDM-X53 (light grey front, VAIO purple back--check NewEgg or TigerDirect for pics) looks great, so my tastes may not be in line with yours.
