Black Mesa - apparently it's not dead

Black Mesa is like the DNF of mods. HL2 has been out for 6 years now. I know these are modders and most probably have jobs doing something else, but there have been total conversions done in less time.

Yup.

I've given up on seeing this one make it.

I have never played the original game (well, I played maybe 5 minutes worth of it on my roommates computer in college). So I have really been interesting in this mod, so I could play the original game. I tried to play HL: Source before I played HL2, but early 3D graphics are kind of painful to watch, and I couldn't force myself to play it. (I don't have that issue with early 2D games, just 3D games for some reason.)

I hope it gets completed, or at least released in its unfinished state. I just want to play through the game. I don't need too many cool special effects, just a semi-recent graphics style will do fine.

I mean, the freaking game has already been made. They're just making the graphics better.

Well, they basically do have to re-make the game, since it's never been done in the source engine before (Half-Life: Source doesn't count).

But yeah, I agree, 5 years of dev time should be enough to finish a mod.

I've pretty much given up on BM:S, too, although I was super excited about it for a long time.

Based on all the mods I've seen this one will hopefully be like a Triple A title. Not some crappy total conversion mod. Most total conversion mods are only total in their shitty nature. Very few are released that are any good.

Halflife was a rather massive game, with rather varied level design, events, and environments, 5 years seems reasonable. Look how long Valve took to make the original, or to make Halflife 2, a remake by (probably less skilled) part-timers is going to take a while.

Forgot about this.

Speaking of mods that take forever, BSG: Beyond the Red Line and Shadows of Lylat are not completed yet, and I remember waiting for them in 2005.

By the time this comes out, if it ever does, the "updated" graphics could potentially be so dated that it will defeat the whole purpose of this conversion.

yep, I mentioned that several years ago in one of the now deleted threads on Steam forums. I told them that at the rate they were going, the game will look even more dated then the original did at the time HL 2 was released.

My thoughts exactly.

Luckily HL2 has somewhat "timeless" graphics, similar to WoW. It might look old and crappy to us now, but the Source engine tends to hold its weight long after most games look like junk. IMO, they focused on the right things - people and objects - and let the background scenery fade into, well, the background. 😉

HL2 is an old game by today's standards, but it still looks a hell of a lot better than most other ~6 year old games. Even with all that said, they'd better hurry up, or their mod will look super dated and silly when it's released.

We can't really complain honestly. It's probably some guys doing it on their free time from their busy lives plus it's not like they were going to charge for it.

free or not has nothing to do with it. if you announce a project involving one of the most well known and loved games of all time then you have to deal with negative comments after years of waiting.
