Black Man Gunned Down By Police In Walmart While Shopping For Air Gun

On Tuesday, August 5 2014, 22 year old John Crawford was shot and killed by police, in an Ohio Walmart store. Crawford speaking to the mother of his children on his cell phone when police shot him down

On Wednesday, August 6, a day after the fatal shooting, the state’s Attorney General’s office reported that the gun was not real. It was an air gun of the same make and model that Walmart sells in their stores.

Crawford’s family has contacted civil rights organizations as well as the NAACP. Both officers that were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. Crawford’s family and friends are also demanding to see security camera footage of the shooting and the moments leading up to it. So far, that footage has not been released.

Edit: Update 9-7-2014 Police still have not released the video.

The video purportedly shows that he had no idea police came up behind him as he was on the phone.

Police supposedly gave him verbal commands that he supposedly ignored but the video shows other wise as he did not appear to even know they were there. Then they just opened fire and executed him.

So, someone calls the cops about a guy with a gun, cops respond and the guy doesn't immediately drop the gun and gets shot? Should cops ask to inspect criminals weapons before shooting them now? "Sir, can you please allow me to inspect that gun to determine if it is real or a fake looking "real" gun before I act?"

The fact the gun was not real isn't an issue. If it looks real, the cops have to treat it as real. And, someone reported a man pointing a gun at children to 911. What are they supposed to do in that situation?

As usual, run with a story without knowing all the information.

A man who was fatally shot by police in a Wal-Mart store in a Dayton suburb after officers say he waved a weapon at customers was carrying an air rifle, Ohio's attorney general said Thursday.

Police had said John Crawford, 22, waved a rifle at customers Tuesday night and was fatally shot when he wouldn't drop the weapon. DeWine said the man had a "variable pump air rifle" made by Crosman Corp.

The owner's manual for the MK-177 BB/Pellet rifle warns that misuse can result in serious injury or death. And it specifically warns about waving it in public. "Police and others may think it is a firearm," the manual states.

A man who witnessed the scene told a 911 dispatcher that a man with a rifle was near the pet supplies section and appeared to be loading it.
It surely doesn't look like a toy.

Love the sensationalism. I love even more watching people suck it up no questions asked.

Quick question though. Why do we never get this good of headline description about shooting suspects in Chicago?

Yeah, even though I think police do find themselves doing a shoot first ask questions later approach, I think this time it is justifiable. You have a guy waving around and possibly loading a realistic looking gun who doesn't immediately drop it... Yeah that guy is going to be treated as a threat.

While I have no love for the police, it would seem to me that packaging was removed, and the gun was probably brandished. If it was in a cart or down at his side, they wouldn't likely shoot. Footage will tell the real story though. I'd just wait for that before passing judgment.

As a gun owner, I would never walk around with a gun (real or toy or air) that is visible to the public. That is just me.

Ohio is an open carry state. Interesting that our Zimmerman-supporter brigade didn't even consider whether it might be legal for a black man to be in open possession of a firearm. Almost as though you thought firearms were threatening and not, "Muh self defense."

If anyone can be shot holding a toy gun or BB gun; how do you purchase these? It would seem that the moment that you remove a toy gun from the Walmart shelf to put in your cart; that would make you fair game to be shot. Or perhaps putting the toy gun in your car; again, fair game to be shot.

Ohio is open carry only in theory. You need a concealed carry license to carry a handgun with you in a vehicle, so it makes open carry pretty much pointless.

Open carry ≠ brandishing a firearm. It must remain in a holster otherwise you'd better be prepared to use it or suffer the consequences otherwise.

Been meaning to ask, how's that horse cock sandwich taste by the way?

This was pathetically stupid whoever called this in. This store sells these airguns. The cops shot him as he was complying and he is in the TOY AREA! The fact that he is telling them it isn't real should have at least given him opportunity to put the damn airsoft gun down before blasting him away.

Open carry doesn't give a person the right to brandish the weapon or disobey police officers when they tell them to put the weapon down.

Guess you missed this post

From what I understand, the air rifle is sold in a box, and the guy had removed it from said box.

Where I live one of the stores has two of these things out of box on the display toy shelf. Unpacking one of these things is a pain, and not something I see some guy just randomly doing either.

I don't think he "randomly" unboxed it. :\
