Wow! I knew they were gnarly. But watching a discoveryHD special on snakes it brings their speed to life. Apparently the keep on biting, not just once. And you die within 30 minutes.

from wiki..
"Black mambas are among the ten most venomous snakes in the world. With an LD50 of 0.25-0.32 mg/kg, the black mamba is more than 3 times as venomous as the Cape Cobra, over 5 times as venomous as the King cobra and about 40 times as venomous as the Gaboon viper.[7] Black mamba venom contains powerful, rapid-acting neurotoxins and cardiotoxins.[8] Its bite delivers about 100-120 mg of venom on average, however it can deliver up to 400 mg of venom; 10 to 15 mg is deadly to a human adult. "

In otherwords, it can easily kill a horse or large animal.

I am still waiting for one of the handlers/experts to get bit by one. They are very nasty on all accounts.

As far as I know handlers get bit all the time and keep a stock of antivenom. One guy's hands are totally mangled from years of venom exposure. Jeez, I watch WAY too much discoveryHD.

While it's venom is the strongest, it is quite timid and it doesn't always inject venom with every bite (which, ironically, makes its babies much more deadly than full-grown taipans). However, the deadliest by number of deaths, is the king cobra. While its venom isn't the strongest, it inject considerably more than any other snake, so it just overwhelms its victims (the Gaboon viper does something similar). The black mamba is extremely aggressive though and can jump quite high.

There are a few interesting things like that with other animals as well (I.e. the one you'd expect to be the worst isn't)

Awww, it's a rattle. Maybe I should pick it up?

The black mamba is the only snake that bites out of pure pleasure or maybe make that pure malice. Other species only bite when the victim makes a mistake handling the snake, corners it or surprises it.

So are you saying I should get rid of my beloved Kind Cobra putter and switch to the "Black Mamba" putter? Damn. I love that putter. ;)

<---runs to start Black Mamba line of golf clubs. Patent Pending.

I don't believe that. What animal, fighting for survival, is going to waste its #1 defense on trivial crap?

Because it's got enough speed to get away if threatened?

Ever messed with hornets? They're just MEAN. One alone is mean, a couple of them are mob like. I'm not bothering him, I'm not threatening him. But's he's just evil to the core.

Actually if memory serves sea kraits have even more lethal venom, though they are very docile and seldom bite humans. As another poster noted, various species of cobras kill more humans than other species (probably a more meaningful metric than sheer strength of venom, which is actually measured by how fatal the venom is to rodents, and may or may not equate to real-world lethality), principally because they live in rice paddies and other human-rich work areas in Asia (particularly Sri Lanka and Indonesia).
