INteresting. Nice to know one of my nextdoor neighbours is doing something 😛. the sound isnt traveling through space it is traveling throught the disc of matter aroudn teh black hole and they are detecting the pressure waves in said disc
 
Thay are using a X-Ray telescope which is in fact a radio telescope tuned in the X-Ray frequency range. Molecules in space emit radio waves. So by detecting the dopler shift of the signal they can measure how fast the gases are moving.

As we all know sound is a wave, i.e. sound is detected by our ears as pressure waves. The dopler shift the astronomers measure indicates the speed change of the gasses so they can measure the frequency of the speed changes in the gas ----> low frequency humming.

I am not sure my post makes sense to you but it's the only way I can explain it without spending a lot of time.
