Just watched it again, probably the 10th time I've seen it. The bravery of those two Delta snipers who went in to protect the wounded pilot, knowing when they requested to go in that they were up against thousands is just amazing. Unspeakably amazing. Heroes in the truest sense. Makes everything I've ever accomplished seem so trivial.

That is one of my all time favorite action movies. Damn. I'm going to rent it right now.

One of the most realistic depictions of modern urban battle.

An excellent film. I own a copy.

While this one remained largely true to the source material, beware of "learning" from movies. Some things are quite embellished. In BHD, for example, Eric Bana's character is entirely fictitious and was created for the movie.

I own the book as well.

Sgt. Norm Hooten (Bana's character) is real, no? I think towards the end of the book, it mentions him as one of the Delta Force guys who rearmed and was going back out after the last of the men arrived at the Pakistani Stadium. He's definitely in the book as one of the team leaders.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a chance to read the book. The movie is one of my all-time favorites though.

Not sure which character it was, but I do recall that at least one of the main characters was an amalgamation of several real people and fiction created for the movie

According to the Wiki, its Hartnett's role that is a combination of several real people. Bana played Hooten, a real person, although his role in the movie is somewhat magnified IIRC.

About a month ago I met and had conversations with the real SGT. Matt Eversmann. Heck, I even bought him a beer.

It was great discussing the characters of the movie from someone who was there.

The really ballsy Delta Force character, Hoot, is the conglomeration of 3 individuals, for example. (Hooten being one of them.)

Well, I'm certain he knows better than Wiki. That guy probably has free beer for life. I'd buy him a few rounds.

Hmmm. Perhaps I should tell him to correct the Wiki. I have his private email address.

And how do you truly know what modern urban combat is like?

EDIT: Oh, and great movie by the way.

Personally, I try to buy a beer for most military people I'm socializing with. When my little brother was stationed at Benning he and his buddies would come over to Auburn to spend the weekend with me & my wife. I always had cold beer in the fridge for when they came and I supplied the food for grilling.

The people who were in it said so.
I've been in urban battle, but nothing close to that kind of scale.

I just finished reading the book as well as the companion book "In the Company of Heroes" which is the story of Mike Durant(the guy who was captured). What is really interesting in the books that they dont mention in the movie is that there was special forces from all branches of the military involved in that operation: SEALS, Delta, Rangers, Airforce parajumpers...etc.

definitely an awesome military movie, enjoyed it as well as the book. Grimes was based on a real character, so was Hoot. The real Eversmann was out of the fight when the first convoy returned to based (according to the book). there are some incongruities, but i think the movie did a pretty damn good job capturing what went on

I'd highly recommend the book "Inside Delta Force" by Eric Haney. All the facts (that they let him print) without all the hollywood. It really opened my eyes to what these guys are really about, and how the guys on the ground tend to have unique perspectives on major events as they're unfolding.

The Unit is "loosely" based around the book. Think CBS cancelled that show :(
