Me every year: I don't need anything, no thanks.
Me on the Tuesday afterward: Oh crap I did need new running shoes, a new vacuum, winter coat, and a new charcuterie plate, but they aren't on sale anymore.

Anyone else?

I don't need much stuff in general, and things I do need, I defer to this time of year due to sales. IOW, everything's usually accounted for and taken care of. I got mill clamps this year. I didn't plan on it, but I've been considering them since they were released. 20% off got me to pull the trigger.

Sometimes I find that's the case in my life. Some stuff, if it's easy enough to identify/keep watch for it, I'll just set up a temporary SlickDeals bookmark to keep an eye out for a good deal. Lots of fake sales on BF and whatnot, so I like to get a sense of what typical sale prices are instead of just jumping on stuff.

We have a home theater receiver in the basement where the wife works out, apparently it needs replacing from the testing I have done. I was thinking of a soundbar instead, but all the speakers and subwoofer are already there so I'll buy a new one. There were some good black Friday specials that are gone, I'd like to buy it Best Buy and use up some rewards money there. I'm sure things will go on sale again.

Depending on your needs and budget, you could always pick up a manufacturer refurbished one for a discount. I bought mine direct from Denon a few years ago. May not be the largest discount, but a pretty good, everyday deal.

There's usually some stuff I can count on, BF is often a good time to stock up on guitar strings. I got a MIDI controller before BF because it seemed unlikely to actually go on sale (and it hasn't) but the place I bought it from did end up having a deal where you got an additional software package buying between BF and the end of December, and I was still able to get them to give me that offer.

Sometimes. I was thinking about a new router, but the one I was looking at wasn't on sale. There's still Christmas sales though. I did pick up ten 30 oz cat treats, normally $15.80 - sale for around $10. Cats are set for a while.

All I picked up was a half price NordVPN sub so I can get past the Texas porn ban and watch anime and TV on sites restricted to Japan IP addresses. Also to watch Japanese Netflix (Seinfeld in Japanese is hilarious). Was surprised to hear this was a big Black Friday though since I had to go to Walmart to pick up my mom's medicine (broke her foot and can't drive right now) and it just looked like a normal Friday inside. Used to love buying games every black Friday but didn't see anything like the deals I have gotten in the recent past such as Last of Us for $10 or Spiderman for $15. Plus second half of 2024 has been kind of meh for games after Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance and Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree dropped in June.

I was pondering if part of it being a big BF was pre-tariff anticipation purchases.

All the spending growth was online. The days of hordes of Karens attacking malls and big box stores is somewhat in the past.
Voters suddenly love Bidenomics a lot more than they had just 5 weeks ago. 🤣

I think only folks like some AT forum members carried forward tech expenditures in anticipation of trade warring. The typical consumer doesn't know what a tariff is, and they certainly don't know who pays for it.

I'm on another non-tech forum and some people there have made/plan to make pre-tariff purchases (particularly appliances). Elsewhere on the non-forum internet, musicians talking about buying gear before the tariffs hit.

Edit: which is not to say "no you're wrong", just that there's certainly a non-zero number of people doing so (which is why I used the phrase "part of it being a big BF")

We bought a new tv, washer and dryer, and both have two new vehicles. Are we anticipating higher prices to come, heck ya. We have a lot of construction work to come next year unfortunately, some of it can wait four years if necessary I guess, or I can build a deck myself etc.

I regret saying tech because pretty much anything manufactured in China could be subject to higher tariffs (not to mention goods from other major trade partners). So yeah electronics and appliances are certainly in the mix as well.

My general point is that most consumers aren't savvy enough to be making purchasing decisions today based on Trump 2.0 tariffs. Certainly some folks are, but it's a relatively small minority. From a macroeconomic standpoint, any spending carried forward into this quarter is spending that won't occur after inauguration.

Despite all their bad vibes and Bidenomics-bashing, the American consumer has been incredibly resilient over the past 24 months. IMO "record setting" BF spending is just a continuation of the status quo.

We'll all know soon enough how serious Donny is about wrecking a good economy he is being handed on a platter.

The only reasons we didn't pull forward a TV purchase and a laptop purchase were: a) reducing e-waste - just use the 14 year old 42" 1080p LCD until it dies; and b) my spouse might get an educational allowance to purchase a laptop when she starts her residency at whatever program it will be.

Otherwise, would have jumped on some of the sales to avoid Tariffs 2: Electric Boogaloo.
