"Two factors behind the slim increase, a disappointment following bullish reports from stores Friday, were heavy discounts earlier in November and online shopping, which saw a big increase.

Chicago research firm Shoppertrak, which tallies sales in more than 70,000 retail outlets across the country, said the total was still a record for the day. It stood behind its prediction for spending to rise 3.2 percent for the season.

"It's hard to say Black Friday wasn't a success, it's just not the success we saw in the mid-2000s, when the day really became a phenomenon," ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin said."

The deals this year weren't that good and there are now too many people willing to camp out for them. It always took a lot to get me out on Black Friday, but I've almost totally given up on it. Online shopping is far more convenient.

Only retarded losers go out to shop on BF. Online is where its at.

Even then they sucked. A ton of "bargains" were more expensive than just a week or two ago.

I'm looking for a medium-high end laptop, and there was nothing great. Waiting for cyber monday.

BF sucked this year. The best "deals" were little more than false advertising.

How can they tally up sales from across the country & have the results within a few percent... almost quicker than they can tally up votes on election day?? Who are these 70,000 retailers who say "sure, we'll tell you what our gross was for the day."??

its statistics, they make it up as they go along

Black Friday sucks. I happily pay a little more not to have to deal with those people. They are humanity at its worst.

actually I take that as great news. There were very few deals. So for it to go up with even less deals this year then last I take that as a good sign.

I'll count it as a "win" for retailers.

It was a win.
Since many stores now have pre-Black Friday sales as well as actual Black Friday sales, the fact that actual Black Friday sales were up should mean that stores did pretty good. It's just spread out over more time now.

Dell XPS $600-$800, depending on how you configure it. i5, gt 420, 4 gb, very good.

I actually though this BF was a lot better with all the online sales going on... I scored:
- 32" LCD TV for $200
- cheap surge protector for $6
- 2 HDMI cables for $2
- Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10 for $95

my gf also got a netbook for $180 (the Target one, should've waited for newegg's though), a notebook mouse for $8, and a lot of clothes for 40% off..

Overall, it was a better BF IMO than last year. Then again, most of those were pre-BF.

Its more of a fact that inflation has drove prices up. So even though transactions decreased, total sales increased. Plus they included gasoline sales in those numbers. I'm not sure what that has to do with Black Friday.

Inflation has been very low.

If even 10 percent of sales that used to occur on Black Friday have now been spread out over the week or two or three before actual Black Friday, sales increased a lot.

actually I made up every part of that post.

I pay no attention to statistics that are impossible to verify.

Managed to get a couple express shirts for 20 bucks each. 40% off plus 20 off 50 coupon. Nice day to go shopping using the old man's credit card.

Glad that you like to spend mom and dad's money wisely.

Uh...no?

It really varies on the individual level depending on where you live and what your spending habits are. Also, considering that most people who continue to have jobs are not seeing any significant pay increases (and in some cases reductions), the low inflation means less and less.

Some deals were good, some weren't. I saw great deals for HDTV's this year, as some 52 inchers costing originally 1500dollars at 800 or so dollars.
