Black Ants

Now that it's a bit warmer on the East Coast... are you guys getting more and more black ants appearing out of nowhere in your home ? I swear I've had to squeeze the life out of about 10 of these guys over the last week...

What's the best way to get rid of them? Do those Combat traps work where they bring the poison back to their source? Or should I just buy a can of RAID and spray around the outside base of the house?
 
In the 2nd grade, we grabbed a couple of those red ants from the sandbox and put them on a black ant hill. They started fighting each other...

These guys are very common... I think they're just out hunting for food now that it's warmer...

They're about a half inch long... I'll find pics as soon as I'm done eating.

I'd call them Yellow Ants if they were actually yellow, but they're Black... so I'll call them black. 😉

 
Could be worse, they could be fire ants!!!!


Hate those damn thing, doing yard work last summer and put my foot right on top of a nest 🙁

yeh lots of them here. Dunno where they come from....seems like they come through the pipes or something b/c they are only around the kitchen sink but I never see them coming from the door or anything

Thanks to Spidey07's lead, I looked up carpenter ants and they indeed look to be such.

Carpenter Ants Info.

Doesn't cause too much harm short-term,... they burrow (sp?) out old wood at first and over a period of 3 years, they can do damage to the structure of whatever is made of wood. I'd just like to know if COMBAT or something can poison those suckers because there could be a nest ANYWHERE either outside or inside the house. Spraying won't help if you don't do their nest.
 
I had a bunch of ants in my apartment last year, set up some combat traps and they were gone without a trace a couple weeks later.

If it helps, yes I've been seeing more and more of them over the last few years. For a while last year I was stomping a few a day in the house (and we keep an imacculate house). I would up calling an exterminator.

Don't know about raid or the like.

Although the generic wasp/hornet killer works wonders on nests of stinging baddies.

Just do anything other than what my roommate did. He tried to drown them in a pool of sugar water.

LOL, when I was a medic in SF my partner was African American and when it was his turn to treat the patient he would always say "How come the black man always has to ride in the back?" while I drove.

 
Throw Diazinone around the perimeter of your house now and again in late summer. You should see them decrease. Keep doing it every year and you may eventually get rid of them. If not, you need to call a pro and they will drill small holes in between the studs on walls on the outside of your house and spray in diazinone. That's where they live and they are hard to get rid of because colonies spring up everywhere.
 
I don't find ants to be bothersome for some reason. They aren't disgusting or anything.

If you don't want them in your house, don't feed them.

Say what? Ants do not feed on wood, metal and concrete.

If you have ants living in your woodwork, then yes, you need to do something about them. But spraying chemicals all around your house because you have crumbs in your kitchen is a bit much.
