Like the topic asks what is the game like? Everyone I see seems to be really excited about it, but I have read a couple reviews and I cant get a grasp on what type of a game it is. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd consider it a rts game, I've only played a little bit, but you gather resources and can build units and armies, you're just the "god" that rules over the land

Never played B&W1? it's kinda like RTS + Godgame (a la Populous). You hold the ability to be a good or evil deity depending on how prosperous your worshippers are and how you treat them. In addition you control an animal who sorta....is the idol representing you. If you're evil and beat people and your animal, your animal will in turn beat/eat your people and probably be defiant, but able to kick some ass.

As a god you can cast spells and perform "miracles" that help your people, hinder your enemies (the worshippers of competing deities), etc... Your power is based on the number of worshippers you have and their ability to worship (no church/temple = no worshipping).

B&W1 was a pretty fun game, and really innovative, but I got bored of it pretty quickly. There was just too much micro-management involved for my taste (especially with your animal). But I think that, among others, is one of the quirks they aimed to fix/improve.

Seems pretty cool, I haven't played a game quite like it. It may go on the wish list :)

I've now played B&W2 to the second 'world', battling the Norse. I find that using 'good' meaning, through impression, rather than military means, is better way of taking enemy cities. Controlling my armies does seem to be slightly difficult though. I like having my creature do things, its amusing at the moment. I've got him weightlifting trees to increase his muscle mass. :)

As for as micro managing goes, I've left my town alone for about 10 minutes at a time to go do something else. When I return, the most I usually have to do is make sure my creature is fed.

Not sure how B&W1 compares to 2 though, at the time B&W1 was released, my computer was barely able to run the game. Because of that, I didn't play it as much as I could have. The present is different though, as I have the budget to build a decent computer, allowing me to run the game in all its glory. :)

Does the game still use mouse gestures? I couldn't play it because I just can never get them to fire off and I think mouse gestures suck. Give me keyboard commands, or little buttons please!

I'm uncertain. And it would depend on whether you try to be evil or good. Being evil, you can take over enemy towns by marching your troops to the city center relatively quicky. If you go evil, then you need to increase your impression rating through buildings, quests, creature exploits, etc. That can take a while.

And yes, it still uses mouse gestures to an extent. However, there are shortcut keys available. Casting a miracle for example can be done by clicking the miracle orb at the altar then selecting where you want the miracle to cast.

It sure sounds like a lot of fun. Is there any possbility of a demo coming out? I generally don't buy games these days unless i can get a good feel for the gameplay through demoes or in-game demonstration videos.

It is frankly what B&W 1 shoulda been. I ve played a few hours of BW2 now and am bored but only because I have seen it all before and it doesnt offer much new. However if you have never played B&W1 then I recommend you get 2 and see the game we shoulda had all those years ago!

Oh yeah and mouse gestures are now optional.

Anyone here defeat the Japanese yet? I can't seem to beat them by impressing. I am almost completely out of ore as well. I decided just for the hell of it to try creating an army and just wipe them out, which didnt work so well. They used that Siren song thing, and killed all of my guys (around 300) and my pet! Any ideas?

It's a graphically beautiful game. Look at all of that hair and grass :)

My 6800nu doesn't cut it at 1280x1024 though. Need to set it to low or medium quality settings to get smooth gameplay.

Maybe that big red ATI image that pops up every time the game starts is telling me something.. Time to upgrade to an x800gto2 :)

And is there a way in this game to do benchmarks or enable FPS?

Which land with the Japanese are you on? I was able to beat them through impressing on the first land with them, but I've just started the second land.

I'm learning that designing your town is an art. Building 'track' housing is like building a slum, it makes people unhappy and decreases your impressiveness rating. Build estates, homes with spaces between them, increases it. Also, make sure everything has a road connection. Placing trees strategically next to homes also increases happiness/impressiveness.

Also, people seem to like having industrial centers far away from their homes. In Caesar 3, I would always make sure to have industrial buildings close to residential areas to make it easier for people to get to. In B&W2, people don't mind walking across town to get to work. :p

Also, placing luxury buildings next to industrial buildings lowers their productivity. IE, placing a tavern next to a lumber mill. Bad idea. :p

What beta B&W2 drivers are you refering to, Stangs55? I'm using Nvidia's reference 78.01 drivers with a 6800GT and haven't experienced any problems.

Lastly, I'm running a 3.4Ghz P4 with a 6800GT and 2GB of RAM at 1680x1050. B&W2 settings are all on high, with 2x AA, I believe. Runs very fluid.

I'm hoping they add a skimirsh mode at least, MP doesn't really interest me at all. IMO, any MP in B&W2 would result in both players being evil. In an MP game, most people don't want to wait hours to let their impressiveness build up enough to win. They're going to build armies and go attack each other.

Edit - 1 more thing, 1.0 save games are INCOMPATIBLE with the 1.1 patch. Therefore, I'm going to have to play through on release version because I don't feel like replaying all previous lands at the moment, although I could do a much better job of it now. :p

I am having problems impressing them on the 1st encounter. I guess I will just keep at it.

Thanks for those building tips, I have already been making sure not to build strip houses, and building industrial stuff far away from residential, but I did not know about building luxuries next to industrials.

Also, what do those little wavy green arrows coming from one town to yours mean? I am guessing it shows that they are starting to favor you, but how can you tell how close or far away from gaining their allegiance?

I figured out a way to speed it up on nvidia 6800 cards - revert to pixel shader 2.0. (I guess the 6800 ps3.0 was all hype :) ) I can now play high quality without any slowdowns. Cut from the post here: http://allboards.lionhead.com/showthread.php?t=100242

Ok.. After TOO MANY hours of messing with this, the stuttering went away. This will probably work on cards other than 6800's as well(e.g. 6600's).

I went to http://www.guru3d.com/nvhardpage/ and downloaded the tweaker. I used the download link towards the bottom where it talks about version 3.1. After unzipping and running, the app appeared to hang for a while. Do not be alarmed, it is reading the registry for current settings. Just let it sit there until it's ready.

BE VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY !!careful! with this tool. You can FUBAR your card/settings/etc VERY badly. (as an example, I disabled fog table emulation while messing around last night, and the game didn't show ANY graphics except the toolbar, lol.. I changed a lot of other stuff too and truly screwed myself. Can you say rollback? After this folly, I had to fully uninstall/reinstall my vid drivers to correct it.)

The ONE item that I changed that dissolved the 'stalling/stuttering' problem was under the 'directX' tab, at the bottom, under shader options. I drug the TOP slider to the left over to "pixel shader 2.0"

That's it. I restarted the game and no more stuttering.

luck. Again, DO NOT change ANYTHING else is that tool if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

Cheers,
Zzyn

Hover your hand over the gold scroll on your town center for a few seconds. It will display all the enemy towns and the impressiveness required for them to migrate.

Just finished the third land with the Japanese. The enemy military AI needs some improvement. Repeated, both the Norse and Japanese, would send platoons of troops over to my city walls, where they would stop. A well placed lightning bolt or fireball would drop the entire group. The Japanese would send catapults over with their platoons, but only 1 catapult at time. Again, easily destroyed by a lightning bolt or fireball.

The Japanese earthquakes were a pain in the butt though. :(

Because of that, I can sit in my walled in haven and build an impressive city and slowly take all his people away from him.

Ive heard that it is riddle with PROBLEMS, Some people cant even get it to run, it crashes after the Splash screen. Tech support is POOR. I borrowed it from a friend and I tried to load it on 3 of my machine cause I enjoyed the first one. I could only get it to run on 1 of the 3 computers. I am holding out till they (EA) patches it so it is less picky

Here is 1 of many thread dealing with this released before finished game
