Black Alabamians endured poor sewage for decades. Now they may see justice.

Gotta love those red states who seem to care about certain citizens, just not these. Take note, this has been a problem for DECADES? Think those residents get this kind of investigation with Republicans in charge of DOJ?

Officials in Alabama discriminated against Black residents in a rural county by denying them access to adequate sanitation systems, imposing burdensome fines and liens and ignoring the serious health risks plaguing the community, according to a landmark environmental justice agreement announced Thursday by the Biden administration.
Their investigation also found that officials engaged in a “consistent pattern” of inaction and neglect concerning the health risks associated with raw sewage that permeated the soil and lingered near numerous homes. Alabama health officials were aware of the “disproportionate burden and impact” the problems imposed on Lowndes residents, investigators said, but they “failed to take meaningful actions to remedy these conditions.”

That's a disgusting mess and it was set in motion long ago, with the less desirable real estate being all that was made available to black people.
Sure you can have a house, over Theaya!
As the septic system regulations evolved, those residents were left holding the bag so to speak.
As water tables rose and the ground could not possibly support the old state of the art for septic design, the only alternative is to install expensive mound systems or build sewage treatment facilities with virtually no money at all.
One could go on and on about who's to blame, but the old fuckers who started that are long dead. The federal government should make those neighborhoods whole.

This is occurring all across the country. Remember Flint Michigan?

Read the article, those are horrible living conditions. That is what I expect from a 3rd world country, not the US of A.

Here's something for @HomerJS that's a little closer to home.

Chester, where Philadelphia gets rid of it's garbage.

Chester is predominantly African American, and other low income families.

This is disgusting.

"The presence of several high–pollution industrial facilities in Chester is no coincidence. Companies like Covanta prefer to be located in low–income, predominantly—minority neighborhoods because they believe these communities lack the influence to oppose them."

I know this article is a year old, so I hope the folks in Chester have begun to fight these assholes.

Lol that is the exact MO of your typical pedophile, move into a neighborhood with low resource parents that is unlikely to have the resources or acuity to handle or detect the problem.

It is an older article, but news like this should not be ignored just because it's "old news". Not that you yourself are saying it is irrelevant, but just pointing out that when people ignore ongoing injustice, that's when situations such as those found in Lowndes County, Alabama or in Chester County, Pennsylvania exist.

And in all honesty, I completely missed it the first time around. The only reason I noticed this news is I happened to read up on mayoral candidates in Philadelphia, and this was a question asked of the candidates. I'm not against burning waste, but it has to be done in a safe manner with systems in place to filter any harmful chemicals from reaching the air. Even then, it should not be done in an area that is heavily populated. That's just not right.

Landfills, and waste burning, should be moved to areas that are sparsely populated, as far away from people as possible, and even then, the utmost care must be taken to prevent any harmful impacts to the environment.
