Bizzare Graphics card/Motherboard problem

Ok so I upgraded my Abit FP-IN9 SLI motherboard to the Asus Maximus Formula in anticipation of the new Q9xxx CPU's and ever since I've been getting crashes or the game minimizing when playing games.

After some checking I noticed my graphics card (8800GTX) temp had gone up by about 15-20C when under load! Used to max at about 70 ish now it hits mid 80's after only 5 mins of gaming.

I've tried adjusting the gfx fan speed with Rivatuner, which only shaved off a couple degrees. I've also bought a new case with plenty of side fans which also seems to have made no difference. The only thing I can think of is that the graphics card is getting too much power, being overvolted, but from where? I've heard that PCIe v2 slots supply more power than v1.1, is it possible that its getting too much power from there? I've also tried a different PSU, no difference. And when I put my gfx back in my old motherboard temps go normal again.

I'm now going mad as I've already spent a s**tload of money and it's no better off, please help!

It's probably dumb and irrelevant, but perhaps the temps being recorded aren't correct when using the Asus mobo? No clue what else, but I'd ask on either the videocard or motherboard forum, not general hardware.

If you simply threw a pre-built hard drive in there, I would suspect your chipset drivers.

try taking your pci-e slot off of Auto and set it to 100MHz in the bios, if this is not already done

the *ability* to supply more power does not mean the card will *draw* more power. that's just not how it works.
