Bizzare artifact issues

Recently my system has taken on the irritating tendency of displaying patterns of artifacts (usually vertical or zig zag columns) at what would appear to be random. It will do this in both 2D and 3D modes, and nothing in particular seems to trigger it. In 3D mode, sometimes it will fubar other stuff like the vertexes and do some really crazy acid trip stuff. It seems to have started after I installed the new 3.5 Catalyst drivers for my Radeon 9700 Pro (Saphire) but after reverting to the 3.0 and even 2.5 drivers the problem remains. Nothing is overclocked, the fan is working, everything appears to be seated and connected properly. I run two displays off the card, a 33" at 800x600x32 @ 60 Htz and a 19" and 1280x1024x32 @ 85 Htz but this was not an issue in the months preceeding the driver update. Sometimes the artifacts will clear if the buffer is refreshed or whatnot, but it's iffy. Any ideas? Is this common? My system specs are in sig. Thanks.

Do the patterns move while they are displayed? Also, what revision card is it (should be on a white sticker on the card somewhere).

No, they are stationary. There is a series of vertical columns on the one monitor, and a series of diagonal short columns on the other. Not sure what revision the card is.
