As a result of a computer I'm working on I thought I'd share a couple:
1 - Installing Vista, the first two 'setup' stages worked fine, then when Vista should have been asking me what I want the first username to be, etc, instead I got the Vista progress bar, then a black screen with a pointer and no disk activity. I don't know whether this is due to installing from a USB optical drive or what, but the solution was to eject the disc or unplug the drive. I don't know why it happened either, but I thought I'd share
2 - One of the monitors I use in my work has a problem, always with Intel graphics hardware (though I think it has happened once with an Nvidia adapter), where instead of a particular screen appearing (can be the BIOS, or Windows setup, in my experience), I just get a blank screen even though the monitor is on and isn't saying "no signal". I switched the monitor off and on again, then the screen contents come up fine. The first time I experienced this was when I was installing Windows 7, the setup screen didn't appear and the computer apparently just sat in limbo.
3 - If you get any sort of file transfer error during Windows setup, chances are it is down to a memory problem (don't ever ignore them!). Of course it can be other things too
If anyone else wants to share any tips, fire away.
