Bizarrely necroed: Varmint or Varmit?

Just ran across a website that sells funny t shirts. One of them is for Varmint Hunter which I think is funny since I've been killing moles in my yard. My question is what is the proper spelling, varmint or varmit since I've seen it both ways.

Varmit is the way they say in with a "southern dialect". But, as in most cases, they say it incorrectly.
