bizarre XP Pro Remote Desktop issue

VirtualLarry

Alright, I have two machines here, my primary box, and a secondary box with some extra HDs in, that I also use Remote Desktop on the primary to access the secondary. Both run XP Pro.

I have two keyboards hooked up to the primary box - an old IBM M13 trackpoint/clicky on the PS/2 keyboard and mouse port, and a cheapo Memorex PS/2 keyboard on a USB adaptor, plugged into a USB hub into another hub into the box.

I have one keyboard, another M13, connected into the PS/2 keyboard and mouse port on the secondary. I don't normally use that keyboard.

The problem is that, when I RDP into the secondary box, my "Delete" key on the primary keyboard doesn't function properly, and the reason is that it thinks that the "Shift" key is held down somehow. If I open up notepad, and type some things, and then use the arrow keys, it acts as though "Shift" is held down.

*If I use the secondary USB keyboard on the primary machine, over RDP, this "Shift" behavior does NOT happen.*

Thorough testing on the primary box seems to indicate that it is not a problem with either keyboard locally, ONLY when using RDP into the secondary box, and ONLY with the primary keyboard on the PS/2 port.

I've tried pushing and releasing all of the shift-modifier keys on all three keyboards, and that didn't fix it.

I didn't use to have the problem either, it seems to have popped up recently somehow. I've tried shutting down both machines, and cold-booting both of them back up. No change.

Can anyone help?

Edit:
More info. On the primary machine, the PS/2 keyboard is:
"PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 Keyboard (101/102-Key)"
On the secondary machine, the PS/2 keyboard is:
"Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard"

I don't know why they differ, as the physical keyboard hardware is identical. I've tried uninstalling the PS/2 keyboard on the primary machine and re-installing it, as I think that it used to be the latter as far as description goes, except that there is NO way to uninstall a PS/2 keyboard in Device Manager. Strange but true.
Edit: Ok, that's only true on the primary machine. On the secondary, it allows to uninstall.

The mice are different too. Primary machine PS/2 mouse:
"Microsoft PS/2 Mouse".
Secondary machine PS/2 mouse:
"PS/2 Compatible Mouse".

One more thing, just remembered that the primary machine is running XP SP1, and the secondary has SP2 on it.

Tried force-upgrading the PS/2 keyboard and mouse drivers, the keyboard to "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard", which automagically upgraded the PS/2 mouse driver to "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse". Still no help.

Make sure you have the latest ATI video drivers. It looks like video drivers can affect keyboard mapping:

That confused me, but later in the thread a more pertinant comment (I think) was made:

"I'm reasonably certain it's something to do with a keyboard hook for hot
keys, so if you've apps running that do that sort of thing, it might be
conflicting with MSRDP"

So Larry, start end tasking stuff on the primary box until you see which app (probably one of your startup programs) has a buggy keyboard hook (which makes ALOT more sense). That should give us where to look next for a fix.
