I'm having the weirdest problem with a Belkin G Router I bought. My laptop is running XP SP 2 and works perfectly with wireless everywhere else. I have the router installed at a friend's place, and it's basically unusable. I could swear it worked the first time I set it up, but it's never really worked since then. The problem is as follows:
Windows will detect it on the list of available wireless networks.
If I choose to connect to it, it brings up a window telling me to, "Please wait while Windows connect to the 'networkname' network.
That stays up for a while and then it suddenly will say "Connected!" and disappear.
Under the listing of available wireless networks, the network will remain displayed as "Not connected" and a red x remains through the wireless network icon in the lower right. However, if you highlight the network, the choice is to disconnect, not connect. Also the Internet can be accessed while it's in this state! Ipconfig on the command line likewise will reveal that I've been assigned an IP address.
After a while, about 5 minutess, Windows will decide that it's unable to connect to the network, and pop up a balloon tip saying so.
At this point you have to go and hit connect on the network again to regain another 5 minutes of connectivity.
My friend's computer which likewise works everywhere else also has wireless problems here. I haven't had a chance to talk to her directly yet to see if the problems on her computer are exactly the same as on mine however.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? Any ideas on what to try?
Firmware is the most recent. Signal strength is full.
Edit: Factory reset fixed the issue. I'll try resetting all the settings to their correct modes one by one until I find the culprit. Must be a bug.
