OK, a bit of a long story, but here goes:

In installing a new cpu fan on my system, I got a bit of hs compound on the cpu pins, didn't notice and plugged it in. No boot. Assuming I got a fried cpu (1) , I picked up a new cpu (2), tested it in my system, no go. So, I then went to Fry's and picked up a new (3rd) cpu and a new mobo with on-board video.

1. First, just plugged in the new mobo with memory and the brand new Fry's cpu. Boots fine.

2. Next, tried it with the replacement CPU (2) I bought. All good.

3. Finally, tried the presumably fried cpu (1), since it was pointed out to me that it may have been the mobo that was fried, not the CPU. No go. OK, so the old cpu at least is dead, and maybe the old mobo as well.

4. Next, plugged in my video card, tried to boot with the vc rather than on-board video. No go with either the brand new (3) or the replacement cpu (2). CPU fan and video card fans are going, but no POST.

5. Unplugged the video card, tried using the on-board video again - nada. Tried with cpu's 2 and 3, unplugged everything, cleared BIOS, even pulled out the battery, put memory and plugged up power again - nothing doing. CPU fan is going, but system doesn't POST. No beeps, but I'm not sure that my speaker works, I didn't use it in my system because the header was wrong pinout, so I don't remember if it worked at some point or not.

The only thing that I can think of is that the fried cpu (1) killed the new mobo when I tried it. Is that possible?? Am I missing something? This is driving me nuts.

Did you fully clean the Pins?

Yep, that's my first thought too.

From step 4 on I'm not sure which MB you're working with, but I'm assuming the new one?

The MB might be okay, there just may be some HS compound in the socket that'll need to be cleaned out.

Ding ding ding, winner winner chicken dinner!

Even if you fully cleaned the pins, any sort of short cause by the fault in the CPU could kill the mobo. A hardware virus if you will.
