Hi all,

I'm sure this issue isn't specific to my CPU, though I'm posting here just to get some kind of centralized info re: the issue I seem to be having.

Relevant specs:

  • i5 750 @ 3.78 ghz (1.3v vcore, 188 bclock with a 20x multiplier)
  • Coolermaster 212+ CPU HSF combo
  • 4GB Corsair XMS DDR3-1600
  • MSI GD-65 Motherboard
  • Radeon HD 4850 (mild overclock -- no issues with this card with my previous system)
  • Corsair 850TX PSU (overkill, I know)
  • Antec Nine Hundred Two case
  • Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
My system is 100% stable under load (Linx and 3+ hours of gaming), but crashes randomly while watching movies and other non-intensive system tasks. And by crash, I mean it locks up hard -- sound goes "static" and I have to hard-restart the system.

I've made sure to change the power settings in Win 7 to "Performance" (or whatever that item is titled) and have disabled Turbo Boost, neither of which has helped.

I was thinking about disabling C-State/EIST in Bios permanently, but doing so raises my idle temps by a good 10C (from 27C to ~37C). Any ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

The advice is certainly appreciated.

Bolded my recommendation. For some reason, leaving those options enabled require much higher voltages to stabilize the CPU. My guess is it has something to do with the integrated PCIe component and how voltage/stepping is regulated, but I don't really know. 4GHz wasn't stable for me even at 1.4V with them on, with them off, 4GHz is more than stable at 1.35V. It's odd that it's gaming stable for you as well though, because that's where I usually found my weaknesses.

Do you have turbo mode on? Probably as you have C-state and EIST enabled. It might be the cause of your problem because your CPU in that voltage can't handle turbo speed.
