People here almost always seem to solve my computer problems and for that I am extremely grateful. This one has plagued me for a few months and this is my last step before I just get rid of the damn cable gateway.
I have a Linksys WCG200 (yeah, it's the cable modem / wireless router combo...I know better now). Whenever I port forward to a bittorrent client (I've tried ABC and uTorrent) Internet browsing will eventually fail. It may not do it right away or it may not even do it on the same computer (two computers in the network total). It doesn't even seem to matter if the torrents are downloading that much. I've had it do this when the torrent client isn't even downloading at all! And then, whenever the browser freezes, I just take off port forwarding (on one comp or both, seems to vary from case-to-case) then web browsing works and torrents slow down or stop.
I've tried this on multiple computers (three total), I've also manually set the IPs, and forced the router to choose different ones by setting the starting IP address higher. Linksys told me that the first 49 ports were used by the router so setting the IP higher would "absolutely fix it". Like almost any change I make, it works fine for a little while and then web browsing just dies.
Oh, Linksys also told me that this has happened for other people. Of course, another time I called, they said they had never heard of the problem before. Yet, the one who said they'd never heard of it said that there is probably a firmware upgrade in the works to fix it. And the best part...even though they said they were writing down the problem and gave me a case number, there was never anything written there so I always had to explain everything whenever I called. I felt like I was constantly being jerked around.
Anyway, I've used many different ports, most in the 1000s to 10000s and usually it starts working okay, but then dies later (or it needs time to die? or it's taunting me?)
This problem is so annyoing. I just want to be able to web browse and download a torrent now and again without every Internet session turning into a troubleshooting session with me and my roommate.
Going to work + coming home and troubleshooting = eye twitch
If anyone has any suggestions, any at all, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm eating the $220.00 (bought it a year and a half ago) and buying the best damn cable modem and wireless router and having the Internet the way it's meant to be. I'm not even sure if I can sell it in good conscience...
