BitTorrent not working

So I've been trying to download a few things using BitTorrent (using uTorrent for a client). I've been getting really slow download speeds (under 5kbps). Every single port I try to use (randomizing ports, using suggest ports posted on various websites) doesn't work. I can test the ports via uTorrent and all of them come back with an error saying that the port is blocked. I do have a firewall installed (ZoneAlarm Free Version), but there's nowhere I can find in the software to open up ports. So it's possible that it's the fault of the network I'm connected to (a school network), but a lot of my friends are using BitTorrent and aren't having problems. So that makes me think it's on my end, but I don't know what to do to fix it? When I first tried using Azureus as a BitTorrent client, all of the ports I tried came back with "NAT Error." Any suggestions? I'm open to anything and everything. Thanks.

Bit tor has a nice faq that goes into detail on this and many other issues. Some setups are real fussy with BT.

Go to the BT help page and read the faq.

I'm not using a router personally. However, the school might have something set up on their end. I'm connected via the school network from a house on campus. I've looked through port forwarding, but Zone Alarm doesn't have anything for forwarding ports. If there's another way to forward ports that would be my guess at the best possible way to fix the problem.

port forwarding is a router function.. if you are in a school network then that is the problem, since they do not want bittorrent on their network. you need access to the router on the network to set that up.
