Bittorrent file copying?

So I'm downloading a torrent, and it creates a list of directories and files that it needs to DL. At the same time, I am downloading part of the same file set from a different source (newsgroups). Newsgroups are the fastest, but their retention is pretty bad - thus, I usually have missing files.

Would I be able to copy the files that I downloaded from NGs into the BT directory, or would this confuse BT? Would I need to stop that particular torrent DL, or would I have to exit out of the BT app (Azereus) completely? If copying works - could I do it on the fly (have both the NG and BT destination directory the same)?

With Azureus, you can specify which files (if torrent is so created) to download and which not to...

If you're asking about throwing in parts of an individual file... you'd most likely corrupt the torrent download... though I have no direct experience with it.

Bittorrent verifies the file is correct using SHA-1 hashes, so if the files aren't exactly the same it won't work.

I highly doubt it would work with various 'parts' of NG attachments. If you had say, half of the file from a DCC transfer on IRC (from start to halfway, no gaps) and wanted to tack on more with BT, yes, that and/or incomplete ftp / http downloads can be resumed properly...but NOT the way 'split up' files work as in newsgroup attachments.

Oh, I'm meaning for complete files, not parts of files.

Let's say a particular torrent has a rar set of 1-20. I grabbed 5-20 (complete rar files) from a NG - can I just dump them into the BT directory? Of course, this assumes that it's from the same distribution.

As long as they're the same release yes, but I wouldn't do it while the torrent is being downloaded.

oh, if you're talking complete files from a torrent that is made up of those same groups of files...yeah.

I think I'm going to stick to this at first, until I get a chance to really sit down and think about how to set up directories for NG and BT.

Thanks for the input though, guys! 🙂
