My bit torrent client downloads slow slow slow. Rarely do I hit over 10K a second on any torrent, while friends downloading the same files get phenominal speeds maxing out their cable modems.

Is my ISP throttling it somehow? (Wierd because they don't block ports or anything... can host web and email servers no problem)

Bittorrent will upload to the max of my cables capability (~40K/sec) but downloads suffer badly.

Anybody know what may be going on and any possible fixes?

Thanks

Some ISPs do heavily throttle Bittorrent and other P2P apps. I believe Cox is one such ISP; there are others that I've forgotten. You could find more information at the BroadbandReports.com forums (down at the moment due to a power failure, unfortunately).

Port forwarding of the inbound ports is another possibility, but it's been a long time since I've used BitTorrent so I'll have to let others assist with that diagnosis.

use netlimiter to limit your upload speed

if you max out your upload then bittorrent cannot send ACK's back timly fashion and your downloads will slow down.

turn on packet encryption
in azureus or utorrent.
make sure port forwarding is correctly set in router

use uTorrent, enable encryption, and limit upload speeds to half the maximum. then, your downloads will finish very quickly and you can upload later.

I'd say the chances are 80% or better that your firewall (including your router's firewall) settings are wrong-what others said earlier about port forwarding.

What bittorrent program are you using? What router? What firewall programs? Do a google search, you will end up with lots of good information on how to fix your problem.

It's possible it is your ISP, or maybe you need to set encrpyption (very easy to do) but my bet is on improper firewall settings.

You're probably being throttles. If you use a bigname isp (comcast, qwest, etc) it's all the more likely. Start using an unorthodox port. Use encryption.
