BitTorrent config question

slag

Lifer
downloaded the newest Bt release and installed it on my linux box. I edited the mail file like it said as well and ensured the path to the ty file was correct.

Problem is, on some websites I go to, I can click the BT link and download the file. On Suprnova, all i get is a screen of garbage. My browser is netscape and my plugin for BT is the torrent application like it should be set up. For some reason though, I get garbage on the screen instead of the app I am trying to download.

Ideas?

Netscape is opening the torrent file like it is a text file. Right click the file and choose "Save As". Then once it is downloaded, double click it.

i'm starting to think Bittorrent isnt all its cracked up to be.

i still dont know why on some links i have to right click and then save as and on some i can click directly.

Its a convoluted process if i have to save the .torrent file first, then open it and start the download.

tell me how is this better than edonkey, kazaa, or the other file sharing programs that you can do a search from and download directly?

Often times you can download faster (much faster), usually higher quality (or at least better labeling) and ease of use. Then again, it doesn't seem like it works that well for you.

If the links are the same type, I'm guessing Netscape is the problem.

if i go into netscape, edit, preferences, and then choose helper applications, its listed there and set up as it should be.

Let me reiterate.. I have tried 2 different BT sites to download stuff. One was purely porn (it was the first link that came up in a google search) and it works great. The second that everyone talks about, suprnova, doesnt work.

Notice I said the web server did not register the .torrent MIME type. Both the client and server must recognize it for it to work.

Suprnova, for obvious reasons, stores their torrents on various servers, some of which may not be properly configured for them. I personally haven't found any though.

How is that convoluted? And the problem isnt with bittorrent, its with your browser numnuts

it _IS_ that difficult. I tried it for a week and could never download faster than about 4 kbs/second.. To top it off, it doesnt work correctly with a very common browser, Netscape, on Redhat.

No thanks.. I now use Emule.. better interface, it works 100% of the time, and doesnt fail.

You can have your flaky bittorrent.. I'll stick with edonkey/emule.

yeah, I don't get this "it is faster" thing. Unless your connection has a huge upload. I always download about the same as my upload limit....which sucks arse!

Your problems are as follows...
1. You're using linux
2. You're using nutscape
3. You're trying to pirate software

I d/l about 150
Upload at 3....

Make sure you open some ports for it
set your upload to 3. and thats what works best for me
Emule drives me nuts
