bittorrent and wireless networking

This just recently started to happen:

Whenever I have utorrent active and downloading, surfing the internet slows down to a crawl, I've checked all the speed settings in utorrent, and its using less than 50% of my rated up /down bandwidth. I have set a maximum of 100 connections across all torrents.

frustrated, I pinged my router, and all i got back were request timed outs. I closed utorrent and tried again, and got normal responses.

any idea as to what settings may be causing this?

Maybe because of the type of router you have? I heard that some routers do not like to have bit torrents running on them causing major problems... just a guess but something rather then nothing I guess

Wireless is a very bad transport medium for multitudes of connections like Bittorrent generates. Try connecting your laptop to the router with ethernet and see if that fixes the issue.
