I did some checking on the net, and it seems the latest Bitdefender is regarded really highly. Does anyone else own it and can vouch for it? Is the free version ok, or should I get the standard?

Man, the reviews for Norton Antivirus 2004 really suck...

NOD32 and Panda Antivirus Titanium are #1 in my books, they scan 30k files in 5 minutes and use very little resources. The perfromance hit while doing a drive scan is nominal. Trend has Pc-cillin 2004 which comes in at a close 2nd, only because of its price($50). Norton Antivurs comes in 3rd because it's scanner is extremely slow and consumes ungodly amounts of resources while scanning.

Eh, not to mention Norton SUCKS because of its file hook into the OS blows... I've had countless bluescreens and crashes from Norton when it tries to access a file I click to scan it. Piece of crap in my opinion.

I have NOD32 installed and I love it. I just wished it had an interface as pretty as Pc-cillin or NAV2004. It kinda looks like an AIM window. But I do love how through it is, and it scans all my files (~30k) in under 5 minutes compared to 30 for NAV2002.

I'll post screenshots as soon as I get a chance.. (it has a pretty slick interface btw)

PS: Bitdefender scanned 356,070 files in just 46 minutes. Using the numbers you gave me for Panda, it would've taken 59 minutes.

Ugh.. ok. Bitdefender let me execute a trojan horse.. but when I SCAN it, it says it's a virus. DUH. Plus, support sucks ass. Given, I AM in my 30-day trial, but they are not responding to my emails.

Maybe it's time for me to check out NOD32, Panda, or PC-cillin.

I love Trend Micro :) btw, I think you can get it for cheaper if you have any hardware that came w/ OEM versions (it comes w/ almost everything...even got a cpy with one of my videocards) and use the key to upgrade.

Trend Micro is good but now there is no more PC cillin antivirus.. it's just internet security. I won't pay $50 for stuff I don't need (firewall, anti-spam, etc.).

Panda has horrible reviews on Download.com btw.. and on a couple other sites. Not sure why.

PS: I have three trojans in a folder.. neither NOD32 nor Solo detected them on MANUAL SCANS. Pretty pathetic. Avast (a great free antivirus software) caught one of them as soon as I opened the folder... nice.

Here's a test for your antivirus software:

http://www.samhulick.com/virii.zip

Be careful, they're live trojans. Your anti-virus software should warn you immediately as soon as you open the zip file (assuming your auto protect is on). Please let me know which software you're using and what happened when you downloaded this file.

Nothing happened when i downloaded the file. I saved it like any other safe file. Then I opened it with WinRAR and nothing abnormal happened. I tried to extract them and Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition picked up DC61.exe and porn.bat but it let me unzip kernel32.dlI.

EDIT: Just like to comment on Crapafee, I mean McAfee, virus scan. We were using McAfee ASaP at work and it totally sucked. You couldn't deploy the client as advertised. The clients would (for no reason) just stop updating. The administration page on the web wasn't alway correct (the client would show one status and the admin page would show something different). Calls to McAfee tech support were worthless. Their solution? Use their removal tool to completely uninstall the software then reinstall it.

The two antivirus apps I've been looking at seriously are Bitdefender and Avast (which is free). Avast picked up only the Dc61.exe unfortunately. The other two I had to submit to Avast for analysis.. but I'm positive they are both known trojans.

Bitdefender detected all three perfectly. I'm having issues with Bitdefender's "Virus Shield" though (its resident auto protect). It just seems to stop working after a time. But I think it has to do with some crap I have installed on my machine.. I think Bitdefender is fighting another app for the OS hook that examines files as soon as they're accessed.

Anyway, Bitdefender seems pretty solid.. plus there's a 20% discount thru 2/15.
