Is this still worth running? I see that AV-Comparatives' tests are all with BitDefender Internet Security which costs money and likely adds more protection, but what do I miss out on with the AV? Spyware protection?

I just use Bitdefender Free. It won't get rid of spyware. maybe some, but I scan downloads at Virustotal and also use Sandboxie. Of course when you install something be sure to use custom install.

Really just the firewall is missing I would think which is more an annoyance than a security enhancement really. The AV part will keep the nasties off but toolbars and whatnot may still make it on.

Bit Defender is no longer recommended. Just use KasperSky paid and Avast Free

No longer recommended by who? Unless you have evidence to back up that statement it holds little value.

BitDefender still does very well on 3rd party testing. I run in on one of my systems and it works great. I also like Avira free and Avast.

Bitdefender(paid) kept making my computer crash every time the network would go down, I wouldn't recommend it.

I used Bitdefender Anti Virus 2015 (paid) for a trial and it was really bloaty. The free version seems to be the best but you cant tell it to not automatically try to fix files. It tried "fixing" a false positive and ended up destroying the file. Fail. Why not auto quarrantine only?

It does auto quarantine.
Some people's kids, right?

At least with the paid version, disabling heuristics speeds it up significantly and should eliminate false positives. Their heuristic engine is very aggressive; several of the clients at work are managed by BD's cloud management Gravity Zone and the heuristics (a.k.a. Active Virus Control) has caused a lot of headaches with third party software that *acts* like a virus (requires Windows Firewall and UAC to be disabled - awesome!!).

does BitDefender even work with windows xp because i tried it out and it didn't work at all for me so switched to a different anti virus?
Runs on every XP machine I've installed it upon; both the free version and Security Endpoint.

Yes, with SP3. Don't count on it working on a netbook though. Too slow. I use Immunet on my netbook ("kitchen kiosk.")

Also note you may have trouble logging in with Bitdefender Free. I had to update IE to IE 8 as Bitdefender Free uses IE to log in with its app. I don't use IE though.
