Hey, I was just wondering if I was to use a bittorrent client is there anyway not to share your files that you download and hide your ip adress from being seen by other people? I was thinking of using azurues but Im not totally sure if I will... I don't wanna download music I just want to use it to download some programs(like some of the older versions of cs 1.5) that I can't find on the internet. If this is against any rules Im really sorry.

bit torrent in itself isn't illigal, however it is often used for illigal things. I always get my patches and demos off of bit torrent since it is faster.

There is a way to hack the program so that no one can download off of you, but the defeats the whole purpose of peer to peer sharing. If no one shared, how could you download anything?

Ok, so say I download an older version of counter-strike 1.5 or something. I have the cd-key for the original cs so it wouldn't be illegal? What if some who dosen't have the key uploads it from me? Would I still be legit?

Whats seeding mean? Does that have anything to do with what files people upload from you?

I think seeding is what you're doing when you're allowing people to download from you.

If you're worried about possibly getting pinched, don't. You only share what you decide to share, one file/directory at a time. In fact it's pretty hard to spontaneously share anything off of your hard drive with Bit Torrent, as in impossible. You'll only share what you're downloading.

Fortunately, bittorrent was designed so that jackasses who want to just leach off everyone don't get very far. Bittorrent clients only send data to other clients that send them data back. If you're not sending and data (uploading), no one will send anything to you.

Perhaps Mr Smiley when you are using azerus you can upload a little. And when you are finished downloading what you want you can seed for a bit longer to get a ratio as close to 1.0. Just my suggestion. Last you could specify 1k on your up, that is pretty close to not sharing.

usually you should be able to click on the file you want and it should take you to a page where you can download a ".torrent" file. azureus should automatically open it and it will begin downloading.

if you're worried about anonymity then look at this page: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/doc/AnonBT/

but be warned, your download speed will suffer tremendously and the people behind these servers won't appreciate it much..

you should only worry about uploading torrents if you have files on your computer you wish you share with other people other than the files you downloaded through another torrent. if you're still interested then go to google.com and look for some guides. there are plenty of them.

Ok, I have it all setup but Im experiencing really slow downloads. The azureus site says that using zone lab firewall 5 will make things download slow and can curropt files. Well!! I have zone alarm 5!!! So what should I do? It said that zone alarm has a history of doing this with other torrent clients so should I look for a new firewall or should I check out a different client?

Alright I installed kerios personal firewall and it works all right but its still not to fast. Im downloading like anywhere from 6-10 kb/s. Is that as fast as it will go? When I had bearshare light I used to be able to dl 1.5 mb/s and I didn't have to share my files. How do I make it download faster!!! Thanks.

Edit: o yeah and what does the litlle smiley thing mean. It always stays yellow for me. It says I may have a NAT problem if it stays yellow all the time like that.

Did you forward the proper port from your router to your computer? Did you bother to read any documentation on this stuff? Did you limit your uploads to a reasonable amount?

I can get 300+KB/s on popular stuff, but average 1-15KB/s on most stuff.
