Bit Torrent Seeding Etiquette?

After you've received 100% of your download,

how long do you let BT continue to run as a seeder for other people?

I'm new to BT, and after having done 5 BT downloads so far, upon download completion the share ratios have ended up anywhere from 0.79 down to 0.12.

Allowing the BT to continue running to seed for other people interferes with my ability to web browse & use e-mail, (& the downloading interferes even worse) so I can't just let it run indefinitely.

Seems like cutting it off once the share ratio climbs to 1.00 is fair.

I'd appreciate others' thoughts about this. What do you do about this???
Thank you.

If you're not limiting your upload speed at all, then you're probably choking ACK's from your machine. If you haven't already, try limiting your upload rate to about 90% of your (actual, not theoretical) maximum upload. In some cases, limiting your upload in this way actually improves your torrents' download speed. It certainly helps a lot with web and email.

use a client that lets you limit upload/download to 90% as said. some routers have qos that let you prioritize packets or something too. 1:1 is always good. and then as long as convenient.

I'll seed as long as I possibly can. If it's pulling on my bandwidth and I really need another file, I'll stop the seed and resume it before going to bed.

i do the same
sometimes i even leech stuff i'm not interested in just so i can upload it 9 more times and increase my ratio

Depends on the site and how much it's seeded already. If there's tons of seeds I'll stop itwhen it's done. If I really like the site I'll make sure to seed a full copy. If they track upload I tend to just leave a few open indefinitely.

If it's not for a private torrent site that tracks sharing then I don't bother.

I'm using µTorrent.
Based on speeds found by its built-in speed tester, with results X 0.80, I have it set to 72 kB/s upload limit, and unlimited download limit (I'm on a 768 DSL, through a Westell router, with "speed 85% worse than for comparable Verizon customers," no qos settings available, as far as I know).

Based on your post, I'm reducing the max upload speed from 72 down to 60 kB/s .

As far as I know nobody's tracking the % of seeding I'm giving back.
The share ratio seems to just be separately measured within each individual download. I don't see any overall comprehensive history of my share ratio across all downloads.

So I took it as more of an ethical thing, rather than to satisfy a quota being measured by an external observer. If there's some external reporting of my share % I'm unaware of it.

I don't see any overall ratio in µTorrent. Just a standalone ratio for each individual download.

some sites (usually ones you have to sign up for) track your seed/download ratio.
some places do, and don't care,
but, most of the time, if your just downloading something randomly, its just a nice thing to do to seed to a 1:1 ratio, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Sounds reasonable to me. Thank you.

Same here, but on torrents that track seeding (like PureTnA...NSFW!!!!!!!!!!! ) I usually try to have at least 1.5 to ratio. No problem since my home PC is usually on all day, even when I am at work, so I can use remote desktop to manage my torrents.

ABC automatically pauses the torrent after you've uploaded back 100% of the file. I usually just let it do that.

it depends. if i am in a giant swarm, probably right away. if i am one of the only seeders supplying people, and if i cut off, no one can finish, that would just be mean. also, if i have like, 10 torrents seeding, i tend to cut them off right at 100% so i dont have so many seeding at once. also, i limit my upload kBps to 20K when i am using the computer, and 35kBps when i am away.
