bit the bullet (ram)

I couldn't help myself at work today, I came home with 1GB DDR333. 😛 Nice jump from 256 SDR133 😀

How much of a difference have you observed?
So far I haven't done much so it's more difficult to tell, but I've yet to have the hd thrash so that's a good sign. I still have my old HD, so I guess that will still bottleneck me until I upgrade, but the ram alone should make a substantial difference IMO. I guess I won't have to upgrade the ram for a while. 😛

I really didn't notice a difference at all. I feel kinda ripped off, but I havn't done much as well. Only a little bit of Freelancer and webpage surfing. I would expect "Big improvements" as everyone else has claimed jumping from 256mb to 512mb, yet alone, 1GB in Windows XP.

Though, the only reason why i upgraded is for BF1942, that game is supposedly a real memory hog.

Well I wouldn't spend money like that just for "a game" but I do notice a huge difference in performance, it's kind of difficult not to notice. You just have to understand how memory works and what kind of improvements to expect. Everything will not be 5x faster when you upgrade your ram - but the things that were bottlenecked at the ram at 256 will flow smoothly and quickly at 1024.

I'm just doing the same things I did before, and my hd isn't crunching at all. Before, doing the same amount of stuff would have my hd thrashing often which slowed things down dramatically. Now I can run practically anything simultaneously and I won't have any problems. It's quite a relief. I know it's old, but I tested out Unreal Tournament. Huge difference there, and I think I even get a higher framerate than I used to. At 800x600 the fps is stuck at the refresh rate (70), never slows down. It used to.. Anyway my concern is more about load times. Now, I load UnrealTournament and it comes up in a few seconds instead of 10-15 or 20 seconds like it used to. Now I can switch from UT to other things, close/re-open UT within 1-2 seconds max. It doesn't lag everything to a halt like it did.

Now KaZaA doesn't rape my system. I suppose if I download 20GB of stuff on KaZaA it might still slow me down, but having 1024MB ram will make KaZaA slow down my system about 4 times less than with 256 😛 It is a hugely noticable difference so far, and I've only done basic things... I haven't done 3d editing or anything intensive. HELL I haven't even touched photoshop! 😛

I'm a BF1942 whore 🙂, and I was looking to upgrade anyway. Videocard is next on the list, I'll probally wait till NV35 though, and see what happens there.

Anyway, I understand how memory works, I do notice improvements. Just not as significant as I would have expected.

You'll probably see massive improvements with your video card upgrade, since you're such a prostitute to BF1942.
