Bit the bullet and got Vista

So I strolled into a CompUSA location that is closing and picked up Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version. At 40% off, I couldnt resist!

I have to go to class before installing (along with trying to salvage my GF's Sims2 junk) so I have a question before installing.

Does the retail full version disk contain both x32 and x64 versions? Is there any discernible differences between x32 and x64 versions performance and features wise?

Anything else I should know or be prepared for before wiping my HD and installing Vista?

Thanks

A friend of mine recently got a copy of Ultimate because of the 40% off at compusa.

No, but....

The retail version of Home Premium is the 32-bit verson (unless it says otherwise on the box) But, you can order the 64-bit DVD from MS for about $10 and use the Key that came with your 32-bit copy.

Not really. They both have the same features, though x64 is able to address far more memory. 32-bit will have better compatibility with hardware and software, but 64-bit isn't too bad on that front.

Best advice I can give is to turn off UAC once you have vista up. Install all your software, make all your driver and system changes, then turn it back on. You'll get annoyed with the prompts otherwise. Once the machine is up and running with everything installed UAC doesn't come up that much.

Thanks for the info man.

I think I'll just roll with x32 for the time being. I dont feel like giving MS $10 more and waiting to install Vista.

Did the same today but they were offering 50% off. Ill order the x64 dvd but install the 32bit version for now. Maybe my next computer will have 4+GB of ram in it and need a 64bit OS to take advantage.

Doh! 50%? Way to take me down a peg! 😀

I may order the x64 DVD later, but right now, I dont need it.

Also, does anyone know if Aero Glass keeps your GPU stuck in 3D mode? I only ask because I've grown accustomed to my 2D/3D profiles. My 3D profile currently has my X1900XTX stock cooler at 100%, but I dont think I could bare to listen to that during regular usage.

So post something that interests you.

I bought the home premium upgrade for 40% off myself. $95 bucks is just too cheap to pass up. But I also immediately orderd 64bit. I want it here when I decide to make the change. Plus the card says limited time offer. So I don't want to miss out.

I am sorry everyone, didn't mean to sound rude or anything, but every time I browse the OS forum for some active threads, the whole place is swarmed with Vista threads it's not that someone is doing something wrong, I don't know it may be just me.

Vista is a new OS and people are starting to change over to it , so you are bound to get questions on Vista in this forum,we have had more then our fair share of anti-Vista threads too by other members.

Matt2 Some games may require to be run in WinXP SP2 mode and " run as Admin" from properties of the game concerned.

Thanks for the info Mem.

Alright, I'm going to backup some photos and songs to DVD and then I will report back when Vista is installed!

Muhahah. Can't wait. WinXP has become so..everyday..

😀

I saw the 40% off at CompUSA in the hot deals section and hit my compusa to find they had it at 50% off!

Grabbed 2x Business upgrades for 212 and a home premium for 83 with tax 😀

I really wasnt planning to move to Vista anytime soon, though it did interest me, but at those prices i decided to jump right in.

Have fun, when I first installed vista I spent 2 minutes just playing with the transparency effects and flip 3d. Vista is great, you won't regret it.

Well it's up and running.

Pretty cool so far, except the installtion took freakin forever.

It does seem like it's lagging a little bit. Windows are a bit slow to open and close. Startup and shut down times are pretty pathetic too.

Is this normal?

Installation was lightning fast for me. I bet it took half the time or less than an XP install does. The windows being slow...You're not talking about the window animations are you? The windows kind of expand up and down, it's not really instantaneous. That can be turned off, but I like it. It doesn't do anything productive, but it's a nice effect, and it doesn't add that much time to the work.

No, I'm talking about it just feeling slow. Like when I scroll using the mouse wheel on long documents, it feels like it stutters.

I think I fixed the prob though. I installed Vista with the system at stock and when I went back to overclock my system, I found that instead of moving the RAM divider to 1:1, I accidentally put it 1:2, half speed.

After I applied the overclock and updated the video drivers to Catalyst 7.4, it seems a lot "snappier" now.

This is an effect I noticed on store-bought PC's before I purchased Vista. Windows snap in and out just fine one on my GTX, though.

well, after fixing my RAM speed and updating my X1900XTX's drivers, Vista is much faster now.

I also think the indexing issue fyleow mentioned played a roll in it.

Vista ran Aero at 2D clock speeds with my X1900XT.

It takes about a half an hour for the indexing to finish up. Then a few days of working on the machine before the super fetch learns enough to load the right apps into memory. Although I think they may have changed super fetch a bit from the release candidate and now load all MS based apps into it. My word and outlook were instantly loaded when i clicked the icon. Pretty nice IMO.

Out of curiosity now that you have it - your full retail version of Home Premium didn't come with both 32 and 64 bit DVDs?

If this is the case it must just be an Vista Ultimate thing. It comes with both already in the box.
