Just thought i would post this as there have been a lot of Asus mobo questions

From Asus FAQ

Problem:
I use FSB333 Barton 3000+ CPU on A7V8X with DDR400 memory module. Yet, this DDR400 can only run at DDR333 with latest BIOS update. Why?
Answer :
Due to chipset limitation, if a FSB333 processor is installed on this KT400 chipset based A7V8X motherboard, the maximum memory frequency will run at 333MHz. If a DDR400 memory module is used on A7V8X, the maximum memory frequency will be forced to run lower than 400MHz as 333MHz. For users who hope to have a 400MHz memory performance, please use a FSB266 processor.

And

Problem:
Does A7V8X support Registered DDR-modules?
Answer:
A7V8X does not support Registered DDR-modules but only unbuffered non-ECC DDR modules due to chipset limitation.

And lastly:

Problem:
I have upgraded from Athlon XP 1800+ to Athlon XP 2800+ CPU for A7V8X, but the system becomes unstable and sometimes refuses to boot. I have checked both CPUs which all uses Thoroughbred core while my system memory is PC2100. Why?

Answer :
Athlon XP 1800+ uses 266MHz FSB, while Athlon XP 2800+ is 333MHz FSB. Due to the chipset limitation, if you use 333MHz FSB CPU on A7V8X, the memory only runs on 333MHz or 400MHz which may cause PC2100 (DDR 266) memory not to work properly. Please replace the memory with PC2700 (DDR333) or PC3200 (DDR400) module to give a try. You'd better use the memory that is shown on the QVL of ourweb site or listed in the manual.

maybe it will help someone, it did me...
